Initiative

The Hawaiʻi 2 Zero (H20) Initiative is a statewide, community-driven effort aimed at making Hawaiʻi the first HIV-free state in the U.S. Launched by HICFA in collaboration with the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health and AIDS Service Organizations, the initiative focuses on strengthening HIV prevention, testing, treatment, harm reduction, and cure research.

Key components include expanding access to PrEP, PEP, and support services, and promoting community-based strategies. The Department of Health set three major goals in 2022 in Hawaiʻi 2 Zero (H20) document - The Plan to End HIV in Hawaiʻi:

  • Zero new HIV infections
  • Zero HIV-related deaths
  • Zero stigma

To support the initiative, four Hawaiʻi 2 Zero conferences were held in 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2023. These conferences featured national HIV experts, local surveillance data updates from the Department of Health, and discussions on key issues. Notably, the conferences included appearances by individuals cured of HIV, including Timothy Brown (the “Berlin patient”) in 2016 and three others in 2023.
